TRAINING CAMPS AND BORDER OUTPOSTS

As the map indicates, both National Guardsmen and Regular Army soldiers were deployed across large sections of the border with the greatest concentration between Nogales, AZ and Marfa, TX.

Most Guardsmen resided in primitive tent camps what saw some improvements as the deployment continued.  The border outposts remained primitive with patrolling activity taking place between them.

Forty-seven states ultimately sent Infantry, Cavalry, Field Artillery, Engineer, Sanitation, Signal or Quartermaster units to the border.  Only Nevada was exempted from the Secretary of War's mobilization order.

Units served for varying lengths of time with fifteen Infantry regiments ultimately remaining in service through the end of the war in France.  Time spent on the border was divided between camp duties, outpost and patrol duty, and, most importantly in terms of preparing for the future, training.

Mobilization uncovered multiple issues the War Department had to correct but the lessons learned faciliated a much smoother call to active federal service following the Declaraion of War on Germany.
